Ask Rotoman A Question!

I’ll try to get back with an individual response, but can’t guarantee it. Chances will improve if you provide team and league details, and ask a single specific question. “What should I do with my team” types of questions will probably not be answered.

  1. For today May 26 2013, should I start Ryan Howard vs Strasburg or Chase Headley vs Corbin. Roster lineup changes everyday and have Mark Reynolds 1B and 3B starting either 1st or 3rd depending on Howard, Headley decision.

  2. 12 Team 5 by 5 re-draft NL only league. I start Kemp, Headley, Craig, Pence, Quentin, Gyorko, C. Crawford, Parra, Kozma, and Kratz (in for Ruiz). First in runs, 3rd in BA and SBs, but not surprisingly last in HRs (13 more HRs would put me in third 39-53) and second to last in RBIs (30 rbis would put me in second 172-202). I’ve been exercising patience figuring guys like Kemp, Craig, Quentin and Headley would start hitting HRs and driving in more runs (Craig not included since he has plenty of RBIs). Do you think the lineup will come through and start hitting enough to make up the difference or is it time to try to move them?

  3. Spmeone in my league proposed me a trade today…i have cho and adam jones and he wants to give me albert pujols, brandon philips, and cliff lee. I need pitching and i think albert is going to get it going eventually this year but is it worth it? I feel like the downside is way to huge because both cargo and jones are raking right now. What do you think? The trade expires on tuesday btw.

  4. I currently have Mark Teixeira on my DL and he is soon to be activated by the Yankees. My first baseman is Goldschmidt but I have Alcides Escobar as my DH because of Austin Jackson being injured and Bryce Harper also out for the time being. Should I go with Tex as my DH or should I try to trade him? Either now before activated or hope he does well at the start then trade him or keep him?

  5. In a 12 team H2H Yahoo league. I currentkly have 3 roster slots being used for Myers, Wheeler, and Archer trying to catch lightning in a bottle. An owner just dropped Gausman – he have the same or better odds of success than Archer or Wheeler?

  6. I have four pitchers going tomorrow in a H2H Keeper League and I only have 15 innings left before I go over the max so I think I can use only two: Jeff Samardzia, Mark Buherle, Chris Archer, Jerome Williams.

At its face I thought Samardzia and Archer, but here are the facts:

Samardzia has a career ERA of 6.52 against the opponent, Archer’s first ever start and it’s against a hot team, Williams having a good year but ERA of 4.50 against opponent and Buherle having less than stellar year but career ERA of 0.62 against opponent. What should I do?

  7. It’s a long term keeper league where the guy will only be $5 (it’s a 260 lge) his first MLB year with $5 raises yearly.
Who is the guy to grab and hold now. 6×6 OBP and k’s/9 are the xtra categories. Unfortunately I can only pick one but who are your top two? J Gray- Appel-Polanco- Almora- K Bryant- Snydergaard- Hanson- Y Ventura

  8. RM; in an AL 5×5. Would it be better to start Jose Molina, or to have no catcher at all? I have a feeling he’ll be negative value (despite the uncharacteristic 8 HRs last season).

You should list your roster requirements here, though even then this is a tough broad question to answer.

  13. 12 team H2H Keeper League – 8 keepers per team (must keep 8).

    I have been offered:
Jason Heyward, CC Sabathia, & 23rd round pick (last pick)
    For
Domonic Brown, Curtis Granderson, & my 12th rd pick (4th after keepers)

Do you think it’s worth pouncing on a higher ceiling player in Heyward?

My current OF: McCutchen, Nelson Cruz, Brown, Markakis, A. Jackson, & Granderson.

My SP is horrible, but my RP is excellent so far. I have Perkins, Mujica, & Reed for RP. I’m thinking about going for 1-2 upper tier SP and going full RP to try and win ERA, WHIP & SV.

    • The reason to do the deal is that Heyward may be as good as Brown this year, when it’s all over, and CC will help you win now, since your SP is bad.

I think the Brown breakout is pretty real, so his future value is similar to Heyward’s. It’s hard from here to tell the diff between a 12 and 23 pick, but the real diff is in whether Sabathia or Granderson helps now. I think.

  14. Hi,

Was wondering if you could give me some advice on a fantasy baseball trade, I’d really appreciate it.

    League details:
11 team, mixed roto league, with OBP instead of AVG and QS instead of wins

I’m in 6th place out of 11. I’m looking to make an all-star break deal that would possibly help propel me into the upper echelon of teams and make a run for the championship. I have Ryan Braun sitting on my DL, and even when healthy and drug-free (neither of which he currently is), he has been performing under par for his usual standards this current season. SB numbers are down, so are HRs, etc. In any case, I’m looking for a gutsy move and I’m wondering if I should shop Braun.

    Was offered:

    – Mitch Moreland, Curtis Granderson, and Jose Fernandez

    for

    – Braun

Thanks for any advice you have, really appreciate it.

Thanks for your time as well,
    Trevor

    • In a shallow mixed league the most value is found in guys who are difference makers. That is guys who have no flaws when their game is going right. Braun may be the best of them, when he’s right. Since, in your format, Moreland and Granderson are just barely replacement level, you should be able to pick up similar players on waivers, and Fernandez is unlikely to pitch deep into the season (due to an innings limit) I most definitely wouldn’t do this deal.

The problem for you is that Braun is such damaged goods right now, you probably can’t get what he might be worth if he comes off the DL healthy.

I think it’s always a good idea to test the waters for trades, but unless you’re convinced that Braun will be worthless the rest of the way, I would hold onto the hope that he’s your savior.
